His Excellency Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair, Chairman of the Abdulla Al Ghurair Foundation for Education, hosted the first chapter of the UAE Al Ghurair Scholars Dialogue in Dubai with a group of high-achieving Emirati students studying at the University of Sharjah, the American University of Dubai and the American University of Sharjah. The session was an opportunity for the Scholars, who are beneficiaries of scholarships from the Al Ghurair Foundation for Education, to voice their career aspirations within the industries of the future and share their thoughts around education opportunities and job readiness.
The session was the first in a planned series of talks, aimed at inspiring youth-centric dialogue and identifying perceived areas of growth within education that require added support. The discussion included ideas around education and career readiness, including a communicated need for more accessible information on universities and degree programs, as well as on the industries of the future and ways to prepare for them.
Commenting on the session, His Excellency Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair, Chairman of the Abdullah Al Ghurair Foundation for Education said: “I am pleased to have the opportunity to listen to the inspiring Al Ghurair UAE Scholars and hear their ideas, aspirations and challenges. The feedback received from our scholars is a testimony to the desire of Emirati youth to embrace educational opportunities and contribute to the wellbeing, prosperity and stability of the UAE. Our commitment, through the Abdullah Al Ghurair Foundation for Education, is to fuel their journey to success through access to quality education. I am confident they will make our country proud of their accomplishments.”
The scholars highlighted their desire to be active contributors to relevant industry events and initiatives taking place across the country, including youth conferences and major international forums being hosted in the UAE. Within this context, they expressed eagerness to receive opportunities to develop their skills and build relationships with mentors and leaders working in different industries in the UAE, both in the public and private sectors. Additionally, they highlighted their assessment around soft skills needed for their transition from university to the workplace, such as communication, public speaking and collaboration in the workplace, as a few of the areas where they mentioned requiring support.
The scholars are pursuing degrees aligned with the priority growth sector of the UAE, including degrees in the fields of environmental health science, renewable energy, chemical and civil engineering, engineering management, and innovation in media. They were selected through a highly competitive online application process in which applicants were invited to write essays to showcase their determination to succeed and their commitment to giving back to the UAE, as well as providing evidence of their academic excellence.
Speaking at the session, Nada Aljawi a Scholar studying at the University of Sharjah stated, “ I chose to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Sustainable and Renewable Energy Engineering because it’s a growing field that’s been prioritized by our government and leadership. The scholarship with Al Ghurair enables me to pursue my ambitions and goals, and once I graduate, I hope to be able to serve my country through applying innovative strategies in the field of sustainable and renewable energy.”
Through the scholarships from the Abdullah Al Ghurair Foundation for Education, these Scholars are recipients of financial and nonfinancial support, enabling them to complete their undergraduate and graduate studies.
